How Long Will A Diverticulitis Flare Up Last?

The length of time a diverticulitis flare-up lasts can vary from person to person. In most cases, symptoms will resolve within a week with rest, antibiotics, and a liquid diet. However, some people may experience more severe symptoms that require hospitalization or surgery.

The duration of a diverticulitis flare-up can vary from person to person and depends on several factors. Generally, a mild diverticulitis pain can last a few days to a week, while more severe cases may require several weeks for symptoms to subside. Track your own unique circumstances in our online food and symptoms diary tracker. It’s important to note that the healing process can be influenced by individual health, the extent of inflammation or infection, and the effectiveness of the treatment provided.

That particular flare-up lasted approximately three weeks. Yes, you heard it right, three long weeks of discomfort and unease

Martha’s experience

Let me share my personal experience with you. As a 55-year-old woman from the USA, dealing with diverticulitis, I’ve had my fair share of flare-ups. Each episode has had its own unique duration and intensity.

One particularly challenging flare-up lasted for what felt like an eternity. It began with sharp abdominal pain that gradually intensified over a couple of days. I had to seek medical attention and was prescribed a course of antibiotics and pain medication. The road to recovery was not an easy one. The pain, bloating, and digestive issues seemed never-ending. It was a constant battle to find relief and regain my strength.

Is a Colonoscopy as Bad as People Fear?

During this time, I followed a strict diet, which included plenty of fluids, low-fiber foods, and gradually reintroducing high-fiber options as I started to improve. Rest became my closest companion, as I needed ample time to heal and recover from the inflammation and infection within my colon.

Stay strong, take care of yourself, and remember that with proper care and treatment, you can overcome these challenging episodes.

Here is a general timeline of how long a diverticulitis flare-up may last:

      • Day 1-3: Symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, and constipation or diarrhea may start to appear.

      • Day 4-7: Symptoms will usually start to improve with rest, antibiotics, and a liquid diet.

      • Week 1: Most people will feel back to their normal selves by the end of the first week.

      • Weeks 2-4: It may take a few more weeks for your digestive system to fully recover.

Your experience may be different to the norm. Don’t handle it alone, talk to your doctor.
