What Does Diverticulitis Stool Look Like?

Stool can look different for people with diverticulitis. Some people may have diarrhea, while others may have constipation. Some people may also have blood in their stool.

During a diverticulitis episode, the appearance, colour, and odour of stool may undergo certain changes. However, it’s important to note that these changes can vary among individuals and are not always consistent.

One common change is the presence of mucus in the stool. Mucus is a sticky substance produced by the intestines and its presence in the stool may indicate inflammation or irritation in the digestive tract.

In terms of color, stool during diverticulitis can range from normal brown to darker shades. It is possible for the color to be influenced by factors such as dietary choices and other gastrointestinal conditions.

Regarding odor, the smell of stool during diverticulitis can sometimes be more pungent than usual. This can be attributed to the inflammation and infection present in the digestive tract.

Additionally, individuals experiencing diverticulitis may notice changes in bowel movements. Some people may experience constipation, which can result in harder, drier stools that are difficult to pass. On the other hand, others may experience diarrhea, resulting in loose or watery stools.

It’s important to note that changes in stool appearance can also be influenced by other factors such as diet, medication, and overall gastrointestinal health. Therefore, if you have concerns about your stool appearance or experience persistent changes, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate evaluation and diagnosis.
