What is the difference between diverticulitis and diverticulosis (diverticular disease)?

Diverticulosis and diverticulitis are two related conditions that affect the large intestine (colon). Diverticulosis is a condition in which small, bulging pouches (diverticula) develop in the lining of the colon. Diverticulitis is a condition in which one or more of these pouches become inflamed or infected.

Diverticulosis and diverticulitis are both conditions related to diverticular disease, but they differ in terms of their nature and symptoms. Diagnosis of diverticulitis is not a foregone conclusion for people with diverticulosis.

Diverticulosis is very common, especially in people over the age of 40. In fact, about half of all people over the age of 60 have diverticulosis.

Diverticulosis: Diverticulosis refers to the presence of small, bulging pouches called diverticula that develop in the lining of the colon or large intestine. These diverticula are typically harmless and do not cause symptoms. Many people with diverticulosis may not even be aware of its presence unless it is detected during medical tests performed for unrelated reasons.

Diverticulitis: Diverticulitis occurs when the diverticula become inflamed or infected. This can happen when fecal matter or bacteria get trapped in the diverticula, leading to irritation and inflammation. The symptoms of diverticulitis can include abdominal pain (often in the lower left side), fever, nausea, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, and abdominal tenderness.

In summary, diverticulosis refers to the presence of diverticula without symptoms, while diverticulitis is the inflammation or infection of those diverticula, causing symptoms and potentially more serious complications. It is possible for diverticulosis to progress to diverticulitis, but not all individuals with diverticulosis will develop diverticulitis. Regular medical check-ups and appropriate lifestyle modifications are important in managing diverticulosis and preventing diverticulitis.

If you have diverticulitis, you will need to see a doctor. They will likely prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and pain medication to relieve your symptoms. In some cases, you may need surgery to remove the affected part of the colon.

Diverticulosis and diverticulitis are serious conditions, but they can be managed with proper treatment. If you have any concerns about these conditions, talk to your doctor.
